Designing Your Life: Creating Spaces for Connection & Joy

Your home should do more than hold your belongings—it should support the way you live, love, and connect. In this post, I share how small changes in your environment can make a big impact, including a real-life story of how transforming one family’s living space became truly life-changing.

So many of us get caught up in the busy rhythm of day-to-day life that we forget how much control we have over the spaces we live in. But here’s the truth: your environment shapes how you live, how you feel, and even how you connect with the people you love. By making a few intentional adjustments, you can create a home that doesn’t just look nice—but truly supports the life you want to live.

A Story of Transformation

I recently worked with a woman who had gone through a divorce and moved into a new home with her children. For years, she made do with just a handful of donated pieces—a table that was actually larger than needed and a set and two decorative side chairs, cute, but not very comfortable. The living room was barely functional, let alone a space that invited gathering, connection, and relaxation. There was no central spot for her and her children—or their friends—to spend time together.

When we curated furniture designed for both comfort and connection, everything changed. She told me later that the transformation was life-changing. Suddenly, they had a warm and welcoming living area where conversations, laughter, and togetherness became part of their daily rhythm. It wasn’t just about furniture—it was about creating a foundation for connection.

What’s Not Serving You?

It’s easy to get used to the way things are, even if those things don’t really serve you. Take a look around your home—are there areas where your environment is working against you instead of for you?

Here are some common places to start:

  • Too much stuff: Clutter can weigh you down mentally and emotionally. Simplify and keep only what adds value or joy.

  • Furniture that doesn’t fit your needs: Maybe your dining table is too small for your family meals, or too big for the space you’re in. The right size makes all the difference.

  • Not enough seating: If your living room doesn’t have enough comfortable seating, people won’t naturally gather there.

  • Bedroom that’s not a sanctuary: The wrong furniture, mattress, or even clutter in your bedroom due to not having the right storage can prevent you from truly resting.

  • Window treatments that don’t work: Too much light, not enough privacy, or simply the wrong style can keep a room from feeling comfortable and functional.

  • Lighting that doesn’t support your lifestyle: Harsh overhead lighting or not enough task lighting or soft decorative lighting can make a huge difference in how we live and feel in our space.

  • Lack of storage solutions: Overflowing closets and no place to tuck things away create unnecessary stress.

Simple Shifts for Big Impact

You don’t need to start with a massive remodel—small, thoughtful changes can transform how you experience your home. Ask yourself:

  • Does this space reflect how I want to live?

  • Is this piece of furniture supporting my life or just filling space?

  • Where do I want to spend more time, and how can I make that space inviting?

The Heart of It All

Designing your life isn’t about creating a Pinterest-perfect home (although who really doesn’t want that too)….. It’s about shaping an environment that supports your routines, your family, and the way you want to connect. Whether it’s making space for family dinners, creating a cozy corner to read, or simply decluttering what doesn’t serve you anymore—these choices add up to a life that feels intentional and nourishing.

So, what’s one adjustment you could make today to better support the life you want to live?
